Cold Weather Tips for Heating Oil Customers
- Most Important
Keep an eye on your heating oil tank level! You use much more heating oil during the winter months. Never let your tank go below ¼ full before you place your next heating oil order. The best thing to do is to order early. Remember, our delivery drivers get extremely busy when there are sub-zero temperatures, which can result in longer delivery times. - Snowstorms
Plan at least 3 days ahead of a predicted snowstorm so that your heating oil delivery arrives before the snow does. Snow and ice slow down deliveries, so planning ahead is the right move to avoid the anxiety of running low oil. - Fill Pipe
When there is snow on the ground, please shovel a path to your oil fill pipe and if needed, mark the location of your fill pipe so that your delivery driver can complete your oil delivery. This is especially helpful when our drivers are making deliveries in the dark. Please remember that if you have an in-ground tank, your driver needs to find the fill pipe, so please help to make it easy for them. - Driveways
Regularly clear your driveway of ice and snow. Safety always comes first and our drivers might be unable to access your home because of a snowy or icy driveway. Plan ahead to avoid delivery delays and re-delivery fees. - Emergencies
If you are worried that you are going to run out of oil before your delivery arrives, you can supplement your oil supply before you run out. Doing so will help avoid inconvenience and sometimes expensive start-ups, and more importantly, it will keep you warm. You can add other fuels from the distillate family to your oil tank, such as diesel fuel (either on-road or off-road) or kerosene (either clear or dyed). While these fuels will be more expensive than heating oil, they all burn safely in your oil burner. A good rule of thumb for most homes is 5 gallons per day during cold weather.
